The Challenge

Cloud Synchronization of Log Data

Ensuring secure and reliable synchronization of images and videos with the cloud was challenging due to potential data loss, network issues, and security concerns.

Scientific Data Analysis & Visualization

Representing complex scientific data in an accessible and meaningful format required the development of specialized visualization tools.

Simulating Underwater Conditions for Testing

Accurately replicating underwater environments was essential to evaluate the app's effectiveness and safety features.

Underwater Image Enhancement

Enhancing images captured underwater posed challenges because of low light, water distortion, and color shifts.

Implementing Buhlmann Decompression Model

Integrating real-time decompression calculations based on the Buhlmann model into a mobile app demanded precise and complex algorithm development.

System Architecture Complexity

Combining decompression calculations, data synchronization, scientific analytics, and environmental simulations resulted in a sophisticated system design.

Our Solution

To provide users with high-quality visuals despite challenging underwater conditions, we integrated an AI-powered image enhancement model directly into the app. This model dynamically refines photos and videos, ensuring clear and vibrant underwater imagery.

Recognizing that cellular networks are unavailable underwater, we developed a client-side logbook that securely stores images, videos, and metadata locally on the diver's device during the dive. Once the diver reconnects to the internet, the app automatically synchronizes this data with the cloud, safeguarding valuable content and making it accessible anytime, anywhere.

Our collaboration with physics Ph.D. experts was instrumental in implementing the Buhlmann Decompression model. Their expertise enabled us to design sophisticated algorithms that accurately analyze dive data, enhancing both the safety and reliability of the app.

To rigorously test the app's performance, we used specialized equipment such as pressure chambers and created a controlled dark room simulating underwater conditions, allowing precise and realistic experimentation.

Our Process

Research & Ideation

Identified diver needs and collaborated with experts to define safety and usability requirements.

System & Algorithm Design

Designed the app architecture, AI image enhancement, and Buhlmann decompression algorithms.

Development & Testing

Developed the mobile app, implemented offline logbook, and tested with pressure chambers and dark room simulations.

Deployment & User Feedback

Launched the app, collected user feedback, and iterated for improved safety and user experience.

"This innovative mobile app paired with a custom hardware device has become invaluable for scuba divers by significantly reducing their expenses. It replaces the need for separate expensive gear like diving computers and action cameras, offering an all-in-one cost-effective solution. Together, the app and hardware create a seamless and user-friendly diving experience."
